Mildred Williams Born April 1, 1926 to the Reverend S.P. and Dollie Ethel (Potter) Newberry, Mildred Mazie (Newberry) Williams, Springfield, Mo., passed away from cancer on Friday, July 27, 2007, with family present. Mildred Mazie was the seventh of eight children, born in Springfield, at her parent's home. Mildred grew up in Greene County. Mildred graduated from Springfield High School. She graduated Cum Laude with full Liberal Arts education from Drury College with a bachelor's degree in English Literature. Following college she taught for one year at Fair Grove, Mo. Mildred was a successful professional. She worked in St. Louis and Springfield for Bell telephone, during which time she was a Union Steward with Communications Local Union in Springfield. In November, 1953, she eloped and married her sweetheart James Franklin Williams, in Reno, Nevada. While her husband James was on active duty with the Air Force, Mildred worked as a safe deposit box teller at the Nevada Bank of Commerce, Reno, Nevada, as a bookkeeper for the Army Air Force Base Exchange, Stead Air Force Base, Nevada, also as the loan teller for Farmers and Merchants Bank Fairborn Ohio. Following her husband's retirement in 1970 and the return to the Ozarks Mildred worked until her own retirement in 1991. She retired as office manager in 1991 from Bohrer, Croxdale, and McAdoo Insurers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, MSgt. James F. Williams, U.S. Air Force Retired, in December of 2002; both parents; her brothers, William Hamilton Cass Newberry, John Burgette Newberry, Stephen George Newberry; and her sister, Bertha Susan Newberry Davidson. Surviving is her daughter, Virginia Suellen Williams, Springfield, Mo.; brothers Sterling Price Newberry and James Stewart Newberry, and many family and friends all over the world. Family and friends may visit at Greenlawn Funeral Home North on Monday July 30, 2007, from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be at the Pavilion on the grounds of the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery near Springfield Lake, Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the cemetery where her husband was laid to rest four years ago. The family of James and Mildred Williams asked donations in their honor be made to "A Sporting Chance", 1850 E. Meadowmere, Springfield, MO 65804.
