Mildred Weber Humphrey, formerly of Arlington, died Friday, February 5, 2010. She was 105 years old. She grew up in Mingo Junction, Ohio, the daughter of John Weber and Adella Fraley, and the fourth of six sisters. Her mother died when she was 10. Although she and her sisters were poor, she always said, We never knew we were poor. In 1929, when she was 25, she married George Humphrey of Bellaire, Ohio, who had just graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music as a violist. During the next five years, they endured the Depression, until in 1934, George Humphrey obtained a position with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Beginning with conductor Serge Kousevitzky, he remained with the orchestra for 43 seasons, retiring in 1977. During most of this period, they lived in Arlington, although as part of a State Department exchange program, they lived for a year in Tokyo, where her husband was the principal violist of the Japan Philharmonic. She traveled often with him, as well as alone, visiting Europe and the Far East, and staying many summers in Lake Placid and Tanglewood. In Arlington, she was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church. Her husband died in 1980. She was thoroughly honest, exceedingly kind, and determined. Her friendliness reached out. Her life and the way she lived it was an example that provided guidance to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She died at Norumbega Point in Weston, and she leaves two sons, George Lee (Diana Young) of Wayland and Eric Richard (Janet McKenna) of Bedford; 12 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. One son, John Robert (Eileen Johnson of Waxahachie, Texas), predeceased her. A service in her honor was held Saturday, Feb. 27, at the First Baptist Church in Arlington. Contributions in her name may be made to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, 301 Massachusetts Ave., Boston, MA 02115.
