JONES, Mary Elizabeth Stuart Mercer passed away July 6, 2013, in her apartment at The Grand Court on Bayshore Boulevard. She was 102 years old. Her grandparents, the Stuarts and the Laynes, settled in Manatee County in 1883. She was born in the Layne home in Bradenton, June 24, 1911. Elizabeth attended Tampa schools and was in the first graduating class of Plant High School. She attended Florida State College for Women where she was a Sigma Kappa. After World War II, she graduated from The University of Tampa and taught 6th grade at Ballast Point School for many years. She loved the world around her and also took great interest in history and genealogy. She volunteered as Secretary of the Hillsborough County Historical Commission and was dedicated to keeping their library and collections current and in good order. She belonged to several heritage organizations including The Mayflower Society & Daughters of the American Revolution. Elizabeth's parents, Capt. and Mrs. Louis E. Stuart preceded her in death, as did her second husband, Lt . Col. George Brabson Jones. She is survived by a sister, Sarah Stuart Trice of Tampa; one daughter, Jan Mercer Brown and son-in-law, Robin C. Brown, MD, of Fort Myers; four grandchildren, Deirdre Mendez Kuhn of Austin, TX, R. Cotten Brown Jr., of McDowell, VA, Louis Stuart Brown of Fort Myers, Stephen T. Brown, MD, of Tampa; and eight great-granddaughters; as well as step-son, George Brabson Jones Jr., of Atlanta, GA; a niece, Carol Trice Stringer of Tampa; nephew, Stuart Edward Trice of Dade City. The family is especially grateful to Elizabeth's devoted caregivers, Martha Wares, Asmerett Gebretatios, Nalini Maraj, Minerva Encarnacion and Eleanor Nesbit at A Choice Nanny and the entire staff of The Grand Court. Lifepath Hospice also provided comfort and attentive care in Elizabeth's last days. Friends are invited to remember Elizabeth at a memorial service at noon, Monday, July 15th, in The Grand Court Atrium. Valet parking is available. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to local charities. Please sign the online guestbook at: www.BlountCurryMacDill.com.
