Whitney, Mary AliceDec. 1, 1914 - June 11, 2008Mary Alice Whitney, 93, Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Venice, died June 11, 2008.A private ceremony was Friday in Raleigh. Survivors include her daughter Patricia M. Borror-Stier and husband, Jan Stier, of Raleigh; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.Born Dec. 1, 1914, in Bucyrus, Ohio, Mary Alice enjoyed growing up on a farm prior to committing to a career of nursing. She graduated as a registered nurse from St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and enjoyed general and private duty nursing assignments prior to a 20-year career with the Medina, Ohio, Public Health Department. She moved to Venice, Fla., in 1975 with her husband, William (deceased in 1982), and enjoyed over 20 years of retirement prior to moving to Raleigh, N.C., to be near family. She was active in a number of professional organizations throughout her career and continued volunteer work in her retirement, especially with activities focused on macular degeneration support groups. She will be fondly remembered by family, friends and caregivers for her strength, determination and independence and as an inspiration to all.Arrangements by The Cremation Society of The Carolinas.
