Margaret McKenzie, a long time resident of Rancho Bernardo and a proud and active centenarian, died in her home at the Remington Club of natural causes on June 1, 2014.A native San Diegan born in Kensington in October 1913, Margaret worked in an office first in San Diego and later was transferred to Pasadena where she worked for the State of California. There Margaret met and married Reginald I. McKenzie and they settled in the Pasadena/Arcadia area where the couple raised their two daughters.After Reginald retired as the President of Aerojet-General Corporation in 1971, the McKenzies relocated to Rancho Bernardo. In the years that followed they traveled throughout the world including Europe, Africa, Asia and the former Soviet Union. They were members of the RB Community Presbyterian Church and the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. Margaret also belonged to the Assistance League of Inland North County and PEO Chapter SX.Margaret continued to travel after her husband's death in 1983 and logged many miles on more than twenty cruises. She regularly played 18 holes of golf well into her nineties, worked out consistently with her trainer at Personally Fit and played bridge until a few months ago. A life-long gardener, Margaret loved flowers and flower arranging and especially enjoyed her many Queen Elizabeth roses. Margaret was a self educated woman with a love of history and travel, and she enthusiastically supported the formal education of her children and grandchildren, all college educated with a total of 13 advanced degrees. Her most cherished recent memory was the gathering in Rancho Bernardo of 22 family members last October to celebrate her 100th Birthday.Margaret is survived by her two daughters, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her eldest daughter, Marilyn McKenzie Chaffee, resides with her husband, David Chaffee, in Rancho Bernardo. Her younger daughter, Madelyn McKenzie Stelmach, resides with her husband, Harlan Stelmach, in Berkeley.A private graveside service is planned.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Elizabeth Hospice or the Braille Institute.
