JOHNSTON, S.C. - Graveside Services for Miss Margaret Helen Payne, 94, will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 11 am at Mt of Olives Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the gravesite following the service. Miss Payne, a native of Johnston, died Saturday, March 19, 2011. She was the daughter of the late John Howard and Pauline Lewis Payne. A graduate of Johnston High School in 1933, Miss Payne gave the same Salutatory speech her Mother had given at her graduation. Before graduating from the University of South Carolina, she attended Coker College. Later she received a Library Science degree from Peabody. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority . Miss Payne was librarian of Conway High School for 25 years and at Wade Hampton in Greenville for 10 years. After retirement she moved back to Johnston and twice served as President of the Retired Teachers' Association of Edgefield County. A member of Johnston First Baptist Church, she served as Prayer Chairman of the Gleaner's Sunday School class and Program Leader of the Jessie Mobley Circle. Survivors include cousins and a special friend, Betty Jean Taylor. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Trinity Mission Health and Rehab for the care given to their loved one. Also, special thanks to Miss Payne's neighbors in Johnston. Memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children's Home, P. O. Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648-1178 or to Johnston First Baptist Church, 700 Church Street, Johnston, SC 29832.
