Margaret Ann Austin found eternal rest with her loving family on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006. Born Nov. 24, 1925, to the union of Riley and Ella (Jenkins) Williams in Lake City. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William E. Austin, Sr. and her siblings, brothers, Louis Simmons, Timothy Williams, Eddie Williams and sister, Adeline Singletary. Margaret moved to DeLand where she received Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion AME Church in 1935 under the auspices of Pastor W. W. White. She was a member of the choir, Board of Trustees, Stewardess Board and Sunday School. At the age of 13, in 1938 she became secretary of Mt. Zion AME Church where she held that position and remained active until her illness in October 1999, where the Rev. Carl F. Brinkley was her pastor. She had kept God and her church as the center of her life and that allowed her to face challenges with faith and determination. Margaret had a heart for community service and helping others. Her organizations included secretary of the Eastern Star, secretary of the Lily White Lodge, Senior Citizens Arts and Crafts Club. Margaret is survived by a loving family, daughter, Bettye Gavin (Archie), Joliet, Ill.; son, William E. Austin, Jr. (Linda), DeLand; daughter, Karen Scruggs (George), Trinity, Ala.; and stepson, Wayne Austin (Nora), Seville; and loving friend, Alice Brown; 10 grandchildren, Patronda Austin, DeLand, Latoshia King (Marquis), Jacksonville, William Austin III (Tonya), Joliet, Ill., Jesse Johnson (Demetrius), Joliet, Ill., Kimberly Bryant (Eric), Tallahassee, Chekeena Nichols (Lloyd), Seville, Kevin Austin, Boynton Beach, Tenisha Austin, Crescent City, Richard Austin, Tallahassee, and Chayla Austin, Seville; 18 great-grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews and friends. A Service of Celebration will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, in her church, Mt. Zion AME Church, 935 South Adelle Avenue, with the Rev. Grandville Anderson, pastor, and the Rev. Carl F. Brinkley, delivering the main eulogy. Calling hours will be 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. today (Friday) at Arthur Mack Funeral Home, Inc. Burial will follow the services at Union Cemetery, DeLand.
