<!-- FH = Roselawn Cemetery in Tallahassee -->Mary Laing SmithMary Laing Smith departed this life March 3 2012 in Deland , Florida where she had lived for the past 30 years. She was born December 6, 1909 to Samuel David and Mamie (Lanier) Laing at their home between Havana and Hinson, Florida. She was descended from many of Gadsden County's early pioneers as was her husband, Emmett Elton Smith.They were married at Trinity Methodist Church in Tallahassee in 1931. They lived in Mobile, Alabama during most of World War II where she became very active with the Girl Scouts and also had one of the best victory gardens in town. After the war they moved to Lake Wales where she continued her work with the Girl Scouts and became the visiting teacher for the school system.She later served for many years as a counselor with the Juvenile Court of Polk County. After the death of her beloved husband in1974, she came to Tallahassee for a while and then on to Deland to be near her son and his family. She loved working in her yard, her cabin in the mountains and most of all her grandchildren.She was a major contributor to the financial success of Disney World. Her last trip there she went with her grandson, Rick and his wife Sandy. They rented a wheelchair for her and before the day was over Rick was in the wheelchair and Grandma was pushing it. She is survived by a daughter, Dixie Bowman of Pensacola, a son, Dr. John Emmett (Gail) Smith of Deland, a sister, Dores W. Fair Crew of Tallahassee, six grandchildren, William Richard (Sandy) Bowman, Jr. of Pace, Florida, Deborah Robin Bowman of Pensacola, Kathleen Diane (Stephen) Bruner of Pace, Gregory Emmett (Shanley) Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach, Courtney Elizabeth Smith of Los Angeles, David Anthony Smith of Los Angeles, and eight great-grandchildren.She is predeceased by her husband and parents and two sisters, Emily Virginia Wilkie, Dixie Pauline Laing; two brothers, Samuel Lanier Laing, John Oliver Laing and many neices and nephews. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home in Tallahassee, (850) 877-8191, is in charge of arranagements. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Tallahassee. In lieu of flowerss may we suggest a memorial contribution to the Florida Sheriff's Boy's Ranch of Live Oak, P.O. Box 2000, Live Oak , FL 32064.
