ELLIOTT , Katharine Lucille (Kay) It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt and dear friend who passed away at the extended care unit of the Three Hills Health Care Centre on November 4, 2009 at the age of 91. Kay was born at Nanton, Alberta on January 16, 1918 to Ray and Edna Bell and sister Edith. Later that spring the family moved to the homestead farm four miles east of Swalwell. She and Edie first went to school at the Gamble and Roseview schools and then to Swalwell for high school. Most of the years they traveled to school on horseback, and later their father got a two-wheel cart so they had a place to carry their books. Horses where a big part of Kay's life from beginning to end. Kay married Harvey Elliott of Swalwell on February 21, 1937 and they first lived above the general store which they ran on main street in Swalwell where their first daughter Pat was born in 1938. They moved to the Kerr house in town and then back to the store. Maureen was born in 1939. In 1941 Harvey was called to war and Kay along with her two small girls moved to Montreal to be closer to him when he was at base or on leave. After a time she moved back to Swalwell to await the end of the war and the return of Harvey. On his return they acquired a quarter of farm land a mile east of Swalwell where their son Grant, who was born in 1943, still resides and farms. Their last daughter Terry was born in 1952. They remained on the farm until 1970 when they moved in with Dr. Elliott to take care of him when he was unable to care for himself. After Dr. Elliott's passing, Kay moved her father Ray Bell in with them and took care of him. She also had Pat's children Rich, Robyn and Allison at different times throughout the years. It is no wonder her daughter Maureen and granddaughter Nicole followed in her footsteps, becoming nurses and caring for others. She always put her family first. Harvey died in 1979 and in 1980 she renovated Dr. Elliott's office/garage into a charming residence. She loved to travel and was an avid reader. She moved to Three Hills in 1998 and to St. Mary's Lodge in Trochu in 2007 where she resided until becoming ill after Easter this spring. Kay was a charter member of the Swalwell Town and Country Club and was always very active in the community. She taught Sunday School at the Swalwell United Church as well as leading Explorers. Kay was on the Three Hills hospital board during the years they were planning and building the new hospital. She was an accomplished seamstress, liked to do leather work even making her own saddle, and was a wonderful artist doing many oil paintings and her famous "snake pictures" for the curling club in Swalwell. She was very gregarious, with a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit which cultivated many, many friendships of all ages. She was sadly predeceased by her husband Harvey in 1979, her daughters Pat in 2005 and Maureen in 2007. She leaves to mourn, her son Grant and wife Shirley of Swalwell, son-in-law Gerry of Oliver, B.C. and daughter Terry of Sundre, ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews. A Service celebrating Kay's life was held at Knox United Church in Three Hills at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9 with Rev. Wendy Galloway officiating, assisted by Harold Hunter. Interment followed at Swalwell Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Three Hills Health Care Centre or Kneehill Ambulance Service. Arrangements entrusted to SUNSET FUNERAL SERVICE, Linden. Telephone: 403-546-3903.
