John Joseph McKenna, 82Retired MSG Airborne Special Forces FITCHBURG -- John Joseph McKenna, 82, died March 16, 2014, at his home after an illness.John was the husband of the late Carol A. (Robertson) McKenna who died in 2004.He leaves one step-son John G. Thompson Sr. and his wife, Susan of Westminster, one step-daughter, Pamela Ann Thompson and her husband, Myron West of Lunenburg, one granddaughter, LaKisha Ann Nunez and her husband, Richard Nunez, with whom John lived and were his caregivers, three grandsons, Willis J. Wilson III, John G. Thompson Jr., Joseph C. Thompson, one brother Joseph McKenna of Merrimackport, two great-granddaughters, Cecilia Ann Nunez and Savannah Rose Thompson and several nieces and nephews.John was born in Cambridge on August 12, 1931, a son of the late John Curtis and Alice (Ryan) McKenna. He joined the US Army in 1948 and served for 30 years. John was a Korean and Vietnam Veteran, serving 3 tours of duty in Vietnam, as well as tours in Turkey and Germany. He retired at Fort Hood, TX with the rank of Master Sergeant in 1978. After his military retirement, he was a Civil Service employee for 12 years at West Fort Hood, TX. He was a member of St. Bernard's parish, a member of the AMVETS, the DAV, and the American Legion. He was also a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Fitchburg. MCKENNA -- Funeral Services and Burial with Military Honors, will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 GlenAllen Street, Winchendon, MA 01475.Calling Hours will be on Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and the Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420.In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in John's name to the Wounded Warrior Project - see www.woundedwarriorproject.orgSee www.masciarellifamilyfuneralhomes.net for further information.
