John D. (Jack) Davis of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and formerly of Destin, Fla., and Kettering, Ohio, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on Sept. 14, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in Springfield, Ohio. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1943. He was the loving husband of Velma Anne (Coffman) Davis, who passed away in 2001. Jack proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in France and Germany as a mechanic in the 93rd Chemical Mortar Battalion and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. After the war, he graduated from Ohio State University. He was a math and science teacher in the Cooperative Extension of Patterson High School in Dayton, Ohio, from 1956 to 1985, and received a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati during that time. John and Velma retired to Destin in 1985. He was active in the Destin Kiwanis Club and in many community projects. John and Velma were members of Grace Lutheran Church in Destin. He is survived by his brother, C. Leroy Davis of Houston; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Tom Blaho of Niceville, Fla.; his son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Gloria Psoinos Davis of Andover, Mass.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Nance and her husband Bill of Lowell, Mass.; grandson, Benjamin Davis of Chiba City, Japan; and granddaughter, Jennifer Davis of Andover. A memorial service is being planned for later in the summer at Grace Lutheran Church in Destin. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association. McLaughlin Mortuary, 17 Chestnut Ave., Fort Walton Beach, is entrusted with arrangements.
