May 3, 2004 Jerome Henry Freeman died on May 3, 2004, at his home in Syracuse. He was 93 years old. Sometimes known as "Mr. Syracuse," he was an active and involved member of the community until two months before his death. Mr. Freeman was born in Syracuse on March 15, 1911, the son of Louis M. Freeman and Sara Shavlinsky Freeman. He had three sisters, Hilda Freeman Silverman, Ruth Freeman Schapiro, and Mona Freeman Atlas Janitz. He graduated from Nottingham High School, where he played basketball, and from the New York State College of Forestry (now the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry). During the Depression he worked for the federal National Youth Administration, supervising young people in reforestation projects. In the early 1940's he began working as an employment counselor with the New York State Department of Labor in Syracuse. At his retirement in 1976 he was Associate Employment Service Representative. At a time when community leadership was essential in efforts to broaden employment opportunities, Mr. Freeman was cited for "outstanding achievement in promoting public interest and participation in the manpower and development programs." After retirement, Mr. Freeman embarked on a new career as a volunteer, using the skills, contacts, and resources he had developed at the Labor Department. Carrying forward his long-term commitment to making the community a better place, he helped refugees from Russia find jobs; he served on the Community Development Advisory Committee, reviewing local applications for federal grants; he served the Onondaga-Oswego chapter of the Red Cross as a Board member and as a volunteer at the VA Hospital (more than 6500 volunteer hours over 25 years). He sat on the Board and the Social Action Committee of Temple Society of Concord and with his ever-ready camera created a rich photographic record of Temple events and activities. He served on the Senior Companions Advisory Council, the Board of the Syracuse Jewish Federation, and the Board of the College of Forestry - in each position providing not only thoughtful policy guidance but also warm and personal support to staff and fellow Board members alike. Along the way he gave countless rides and encouraging words to friends as they aged, and year after year he found time to grow a stunning collection of over 100 tuberous begonias which attracted sight-seers to his back yard and which he was generous in sharing. He was predeceased in 1991 by Rose Wilson Freeman, his wife of 50 years. Survivors include nieces Susan Freeman Schapiro, Sally Schapiro Vernon, and Miriam Atlas Glover; nephew, David F. Atlas, and brother-in-law, John Janitz. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday at Temple Society of Concord. Calling hour from 1:30 to 2:30 at the Temple, 910 Madison St. Burial will be in the Temple Society of Concord Section of Woodlawn Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a charity of your choice. birnbaum funeral service, inc
