BRATTLEBORO -- Helen H. Smith, 98, formerly of High Street and Putney Road in Brattleboro, and Largo Fla., died Sunday July 30, 2006 at the Langdon Place in Keene, N.H., where she and her husband had moved in 1996.She was born on Feb. 2, 1908, and raised in Brattleboro by her parents Henry Harrison and Jenny (Symmester) Hildreth. Graduating from Brattleboro High School, she was employed by the Clark Insurance Agency, the Taylor Insurance Agency, the School for International Training, and finally retiring from the office of Phillip A. Wheeler.She was long active in the Brattleboro Business and Professional Women's club, serving many years as its treasurer. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed friends, traveling and playing bridge. Most of all she loved and was loved by her six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. On Oct. 17, 1925, she married her loving husband, Gordon F. Smith.Mrs. Smith is survived by her two daughters and their families, Caryl Thurston of West Swanzey N.H., and Sylvia Morse of Springfield.She was predeceased by her husband in 1996.Graveside services for Mrs. Smith will be held on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery in Brattleboro.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or charity of ones choice.Ker Westerlund Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family.
