SMITH _ Helen Leona (nee Campbell) died suddenly at her home on Galiano Island July 4, 2003. Wife of the late Alexander Smith, she is survived by her daughter Anne (Marshall), and her three sons Alex, Randy, and Douglas. Helen was a much loved Nana to six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Born September 4, 1917 in Vancouver, she made the city home port for her family until retiring with her husband to Galiano in 1970. Always caring and compassionate, Helen was often referred to as "my second mom". Her lifelong love of learning was an inspiration to many of her students at Simon Fraser School in Vancouver and Galiano School. Her gentle and modest presence will remain a fond memory to all who knew her. Totally blind during her last years, Helen was immensely grateful to CNIB for her "talking books". The family would like to acknowledge the tremendously caring medical community on Galiano, Dr. Beaver, Collette, and the ambulance crew. No service by request.
