Helen Louise Lee passed away Jan. 24, 2009, at the Manor at Bluewater Bay, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 31, 1914, in Carrollton, Ky., the daughter of the late Lewis William and Helen Gertrude Sullenger. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Gary Emerson Lee and her brother, James Newton Sullenger. She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Sullenger of Fort Walton Beach, and by her five sons, Robert E. Lee and wife Nancy, David S. Lee and wife Linda, James L. Lee, Gary E. Lee, Jr. and wife Connie, and John M. Lee and wife Susan. Helen was grandmother to Dr. Laura Lee Anderson and husband Jim, Helen Elaine Ashley and husband Larry, Jamee Louise Thompson and husband De, Heidi Michele Valveri and husband Jim, David Scott Lee, Jr., Gary Emerson Lee III, Kristen Ann Lee, Evan Wilson Lee, Brooke Alison Lee, and Brittany Allison Lee. She was great grandmother to Anna Ashley, Robert Ashley, Ryan Ashley, Bryce Valveri, Grant Valveri, Cole Valveri, DeWitt Thompson VI, Helen Thompson, Grace Thompson, and Isabella Lee. Helen graduated from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., in 1937, with a triple major in English, French and Math. She came to Okaloosa County soon after her graduation and taught at the Baker School until 1943. Helen married Gary on Dec. 28, 1940. They moved to Ft. Walton Beach in 1949, where he founded Lee Pontiac Sales and they became active participants in the growth of the area. Helen was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach, where she taught first grade Sunday school for more than 20 years. At the church she was also a teacher in the International English Program. She was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed golfing as a member of Indian Bayou Ladies Golf Association. She and Gary enjoyed traveling with dear friends and loved their long walks and special summers spent with family and friends at Navarre Beach. Her greatest love was the time spent with her sister, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in her home in Indian Bayou. The family would like to offer a very special thanks to the management and staff of the Manor at Bluewater Bay. Thanks also to her wonderful caregivers, Mary Davenport, Sue Dalton, Mary Black and Beryl Coppola. Services will be held Tuesday, Jan, 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach. An opportunity for visitation with the family will follow the service in the Welcome Center of the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home.
