MARTIN, Hana (Hanka) September 3, 1921 - June 17, 2011 With great sadness, her family announces that Hana (Hanka) Martin died peacefully at home on Friday, June 17, 2011. Hanka will be lovingly remembered by her husband Brett Stevens, daughter Monica Martin (Robert Bowles), son Michael Browne (Linda), grandsons Dan and Kevin Browne as well as niece Jana Morales and her family in Caracas, Venezuela. Hanka was born in 1921 in Prague, Czechoslovakia and emigrated first to England after WWII and then to Montreal. Her second husband, geologist Rudolf Martin, took her to Venezuela and ultimately to Calgary where she lived for the last fifty-six years, complaining regularly that it was either too hot or too cold. After Rudy died in 1972, she met and married Brett in 1978. Hanka was a woman ahead of her time in almost all areas. She possessed a keen intellect, a deep understanding and appreciation for the arts and politics and was always the most elegant woman at any gathering. She was also one of the first women in the Calgary oil patch. Hanka inherited Rudy's consulting company and ran it successfully with no geological background but revealing a very good head for business. She was actively involved in the running of the company up until only a few months ago. Hanka was the first woman to have her own membership at the Calgary Petroleum Club, something she fought for. All in all, she was a force to be reckoned with as anyone who met her quickly recognized. The family wishes to thank her caregivers for the excellent care, kind understanding and companionship they provided these past nineteen months. At her request, there will be no public Funeral Service. A small gathering to honour her life will be announced at a later date. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor's choice. In living memory of Hana Martin, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
