DANFORTH - Gertie M. Bartlett passed away March 31, 2012, after several years at Houlton Regional Hospital Progressive Care Facility. She was born June 11, 1917, in Brookton, the daughter of Ella (Byrnes) and Harold Daggett. At the age of 2, after the death of her father from influenza, she was raised by her grandparents, Omer and Annie Daggett, in Brookton. Gertie attended schools in Brookton, Lee Academy, then graduated in 1934 from Danforth High School, where she was a member of the Danforth Alumni Association. She married Eaton "Biscuit" Bartlett, they celebrated their 50th anniversary in June 1984. They owned Baskahegan camps and dining room in Brookton for 30 years. Their dining room and meals were famous all over the state. She was a member of Brookton Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school and serving as church treasurer for many years, and where she played piano for 50 years; she was in demand to play for many weddings and funerals. She was president of Danforth Garden Club and a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Danforth. Through the years she was employed during World War II at Bath Iron Works, did secretarial jobs at Kobacker store in Buffalo, N.Y., and at Industrial Park, worked as secretary at Grant's store in Hartford, Conn., and was an employee of the Kelley Girls secretarial pool. She worked several years as secretary to the director of nursing at Hartford Hospital and worked at Bangor State Hospital. These positions were mainly during the winter months when the restaurant business was closed. She took care of some of the Bartlett grandchildren in their younger days, due to family illness. After the death of her husband in 1984, she resided with her daughter for 20 years in Danforth. She worked in the office at Stillwater Nursing Home, was on the board of East Grand Health Center and Danforth Habilitation Association. She was able to enjoy several trips in later years. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Gertrude Martha (Bartlett) Ripley of Danforth; one sister, Ruth Marshall of Clarence, N.Y., and her extended family; two special cousins, Evelyn Stoliker and Nancy Wood and family of Acushnet, Mass.; several Bartlett sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and their children, and many dear friends. Gertie's husband, Eaton, predeceased her in 1984; also infant daughters, Annie Maybelle, Jan. 16, 1935, and Maybelle Eleanor, Nov. 10, 1936; her mother and stepfather, Ella and William Poisson; an older sister, Dorothy; and a half brother, Richard Tate. Many thanks go out to the excellent care and attention she received, especially the kisses she enjoyed. She loved you all. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brookton Baptist Church with the Rev. Peter Grenier officiating. There will be visitation noon until the time of service at the church with a gathering and luncheon after the service. Interment will be at Danforth Cemetery.
