JOHNSON, George Edward Chief Petty Officer January 30, 1928 March 29, 2012 In Photo: On board the Cayuga 1951 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Dad George" at The Lodge at Broadmead in the presence of family. George will be greatly missed by his daughter Treacy (Richard); son Tom (granddaughter Noa, mother Petra); family in Saskatchewan and Ontario; and many friends particularly Jean Campbell (Cortes Island). He was predeceased by his wife Mary Bernadette Bonnie" (July 31st 2011) and sister Betty Wolchuck. George was born in Winnipeg Manitoba to Grace Hammersley and George Alfred Johnson. He quit high school and lied about his age to join the Navy as a young man. Even though unable to finish school, he wanted it to be known that he attended Gordon Bell Junior Secondary. During the Navy Dad told us he was a weapons man", completed two tours in Korea and travelled the world. Following 26 years in the Navy, George worked for the Saanich School District for 25 years, finishing his career as a Custodial Supervisor for schools; he especially loved his time at Parkland Secondary. Dad finished his work career by taking a custodial posting with Slegg Lumber in Sidney and a stint at the Greater Victoria Airport as a security guard. Whether you had just met him or knew him for a long time, George had an uncanny ability to form friendships instantly. He was a true character who loved life, people and having a good laugh he could simply settle in wherever he was, as if he had been at home for years. Our deepest appreciation to Dr. J Antonsen and Dr. J Forster for their respectful care, Extended Care South Staff and Mrs. R Oakley (SW) Saanich Peninsula Community Hospital; and, Jubilee 6 and 7 floor Staff for care marked by kindness, compassion and humour. Finally, to Broadmead Lodge Staff so much you did for Dad and for us you never missed a step and we will miss you. Those that knew George are invited to a shared service at Broadmead Lodge's Oak Room Friday, July 6 at 1:30 followed by a celebration in the Maple Room. In lieu of flowers, donations to Saanich Peninsula Hospital (Extended Care Unit) or Lodge at Broadmead Foundation Funds would be appreciated. Condolences may be sent c/o Treacy Roberts-Johnson 6705 Tamany Drive, Victoria B.C. V8Z 5Y8 653905
