Morrison, Frances Passed away peacefully on August 14, 2011 at the age of 92 at the intermediate care home at Luther Heights on Alexandra Ave., where she had received excellent and compassionate care since 2009. Frances was the cherished wife of the late Rev. Harvey Morrison. She will be lovingly remembered by her son David and his wife Alena Heitlinger; grandchildren Heather Morrison (Neil Navin), Jonathan (Lucy Davies), Daniel (Emilie Busquet), and Michael (Danielle Takacs); and great-grandchildren Cecilia and Patrick Navin. She is survived by her sister Phyllis McOrmond, sister-in-law Betty Harrington, brother-in-law the Rev. Dale Morrison (Mildred), and her great friend and surrogate daughter Elaine Tenning. She was pre-deceased by her sisters Jean Martin and Marilou Will and her brother Robert Harrington. Born in Saskatoon in 1918, Frances was the daughter of G.W. and Betty Harrington. She attended Victoria School, Nutana Collegiate, and the University of Saskatchewan. Her wonderful marriage with Harvey ended after just four years with his tragic death in 1943. Later that year, she joined the staff of the Saskatoon Public Library as an assistant. After completing a library science degree at the University of Toronto, she became successively children's librarian, head of reference, and assistant chief librarian before her appointment in 1961 as Chief Librarian the first woman department head in the city. During the time she was with the library, she saw the staff grow from 13 to more than 90. As Chief Librarian, Frances was responsible for a major expansion of the city's library service, the construction of two new branches (including the new main branch, opened in 1966), a local history room, enhanced programming services, and the creation of audiovisual and fine arts departments. She played a prominent role in provincial and national library associations and in the establishment of the regional library system in Saskatchewan. When she retired in 1980, the city named the main branch Frances Morrison Library in her honour. Frances was deeply committed to community and public service. She participated actively in the Meewasin Valley Authority, the Saskatchewan Arts Board (which she chaired), the Saskatoon Business and Professional Women's Club, the University Women's Club, the YWCA, the Saskatoon Heritage Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Grosvenor Park United Church. She received the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977, the Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award of the Canadian Library Association in 1981, a YWCA Woman of the Year Award in 1989, and the Canada 125 Medal in 1993. In 1999 she was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit for her contributions to library services in the province. She was recognized with a Saskatchewan Centennial Leadership Award in 2005, and in 2009 was named as one of the 100 graduates of influence by the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan. Frances devoted loving care and attention to her parents as they aged, and then to the late Ed Upthegrove, a long-time friend. Her great loves were books, travel, and family, and she had more time for all of these after her retirement. David, Alena, and the grandchildren have many treasured memories of good times in Saskatoon and Peterborough, and of great trips to the Rockies, Europe, and Mexico with Grandma Frances. She greatly influenced their love of reading. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, at 2:00 p.m., at Grosvenor Park United Church with Rev. David Kim-Cragg officiating. It will be followed by a reception in the church hall. Earlier in the day, there will be a private family interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those who so desire may make memorial donations to the Luther Care Foundation ( www.luthercare.com ) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan ( www.heartandstroke.sk.ca ). Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME. 244-5577
