PHILLIPS, Florence Elizabeth (Betty). Betty Phillips (nee Marshall) died in Ottawa after a brief illness. She was in her ninety-first year. Predeceased by husband Dr. Norman W.F. Phillips, son Donald of Toronto, and brothers Kenneth, Douglas, and Harry Marshall, she is survived by daughters Norma (Fakhari Siddiqui) of Vernon, B.C. and Onolee (Kenneth Whicher) of Shawville, Quebec: son Roger (Ann) of Regina; grandchildren Andree Phillips (Connor Haugh) of Bedford, New Hampshire, Philip and Elizabeth Whicher of Shawville, Shaheen Siddiqui (Robin Shropshire) of Helena, Montana, Shahauna Siddiqui (Peter Zyla) of Calgary, and Sabrina Siddiqui of Warwick, Bermuda; and great grandchildren Meaghan and Connor Haugh of Bedford. Born in Victoriaville, Quebec, the daughter of the late Hattie Georgina and George Frederick Marshall, she grew up in Montreal where, after graduating from McGill University she taught school briefly prior to her marriage in 1938. During World War Two she and her husband and growing family lived in Kingston, Ontario, where she was a founding member and first president of the University Women's Club of Kingston. The family moved to Arvida, Quebec in 1946 where she subsequently organized another branch of the UWC. When all her children had reached school age she returned to her teaching career at the Arvida High School and its successor the Saguenay Valley High School where she headed the English Department. Active in community affairs in the Saguenay she began the first successful collection of gifts and money for the children's orphanage in Chicoutimi. For many years she chaired the Arvida Municipal Library holding the meetings in French, bringing in many new books and considerably increasing the circulation of books in both French and English. (Both Arvida and Chicoutimi are now part of the amalgamated Ville Saguenay). In 1967 she was awarded the Centennial Medal which the local newspaper reported as "a singular honour for her service to the nation". She and husband Norman both retired in 1973 and they spent their early retirement years in Europe. Moving back to Canada in 1989 because of her husband's ill health they took up residence in Lennoxville, Quebec, where she looked after him until his death in 1990. Since mid-2003 she resided in a retirement home near Ottawa. The family wishes to thank especially caregiver Betty Heath who was a great companion for Betty over many months as well as the attentive staff at Riverpark Place in Nepean. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, May 25, at the Kelly Funeral Home at 2313 Carling Avenue, in Nepean, Ontario, followed by a reception. The funeral service itself will be held at 2 pm on June 18 at the Cass Funeral Home, 6 Belvidere, in Lennoxville followed by interment in the family plot at the nearby Malvern cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated. The Ottawa Citizen
