MURRAY, Elizabeth LilyApril 7, 1931 - December 2, 2013Elizabeth Murray passed away at the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew, Ontario. She was the beloved wife of Lcdr. Robert T. Murray, RCN, and much loved mother of Michael Robert and Valerie Anne (Hemphill). She leaves behind three grandchildren, Sean Robert, Caitlin Rogers, Robin James and her great grand-daughter Zayna Jean Michelle West. Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her parents Cdr. A.D.G. Bagot, Royal Navy, and Joyce Ainslie Bagot (nee Porteous) and her younger sister Cecilia Joyce. Elizabeth was born in Nuwara Eliya, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) on a tea plantation managed by her father. She also lived in Egypt and Australia before arriving in England in 1945. In 1950 she joined the Royal Navy as a WRNS (Wren) and trained as an aircraft mechanic. It was while she was stationed in RNAS Lossiemouth, Scotland that she met her soon to be husband, Robert, a Canadian Naval Pilot. Three months later, on July 30, 1954, they were married in Saint Mary's Church, Market Drayton, Shropshire, England. After marrying they lived in Northern Ireland before moving to Canada and settling in Nova Scotia, then Ontario. Among Elizabeth's many interests she was particularly fond of entertaining, horseback riding and caring for wild animals. Elizabeth was an advocate for animal rights and took a particular interest in animal rehabilitation. She started the Orphaned Wildlife Foundation in 1983, a local organization that cared for injured and orphaned wildlife. In 1987 she joined the newly founded Coalition For Wildlife that later became the Ottawa Carleton Wildlife Center. Elizabeth liked travelling and later in life enjoyed going on ocean cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe. In 2004, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and the 'long good- bye' began. Her family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude and thanks to the staff of the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew, whose support and kindness was greatly appreciated. Friends and Family are invited to visit Beechwood, Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue (east of Vanier Parkway), on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. until time of Memorial Service in the Sacred Space at 11 a.m. followed by interment in the National Military Cemetery of Beechwood Cemetery. The family welcomes you to join them for a reception following the interment in the Borden/Fleming Suites. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimers Society of Canada or the Ottawa Carleton Wildlife Center would be appreciated.
