JONES, Elizabeth ELIZABETH CARMICHAEL JONES Artist and interior designer, Elizabeth Carmichael Jones, age 79, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at her residence in Jackson, Georgia. She was born in Woodbury, Georgia, daughter of the late Thomas Aldine Carmichael and Mary Hooten Carmichael. Liz was a graduate of Sparta High School and the Lamar Dodd College of Art at the University of Georgia. She was employed for several years by the Davison-Paxon Company as an interior designer. Later she was employed by the State of Georgia as artist and set designer with Georgia Educational TV and taught at the International School of Art in Atlanta. She was section chief of arts and graphics and art director for Outdoors in Georgia magazine from 1972-1980 for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Over her career, Liz was commissioned to create detailed paintings of many species of birds, fish, and other animals. Her artwork has been included in permanent collections at Oxford University in England and the University of Vienna, Austria and was placed in the Department of Natural Resources boardroom in Atlanta. Her work has won numerous awards and was selected for the Georgia Wildlife Management Area stamp 1981-82. Her drawings were frequently selected for publication in nationally distributed wildlife magazines. She was a member of the Butts County Council for the Arts and was a two term member of the Jackson City Council. Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Jones , in 2011. Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Janie Carmichael; nieces, Betsy and Brent McCormick, Michelle and Markus Thadaney; nephew, T. Carmichael; nieces, Ann Garziiia, Lee Hodges, and Amy Faulk; great niece and great nephews, Caroline and Thomas McCormick and Mattias Thadaney. Liz had a great love for animals, especially her cats. Memorial contributions can be made to Butts County Animal Shelter, 158 Bibb Station Road, Jackson, Georgia 30233. A memorial service for Elizabeth Carmichael Jones will be Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home in Jackson. Dr. Ed Hoard will officiate.
