ERNEST JAMES GAUDETTE - MONKTON, Vt. - Ernest "Ernie" James Gaudette passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Health Care surrounded by his family. The son of Walter Gaudette and Nellie (Soucy), Ernie was born Jan. 14, 1918, in Cornish, N.H., and was the seventh of 10 children. He would have celebrated his 96th birthday in January. He married Ruth Pettengill on May 24, 1940. A longtime resident of Williston, Vt., Ernie served his country in the U.S. Army in W.W.II. He was one of the eight original members and a life member of the Williston Fire Dept., which was started in 1947. He was a member of the Williston Federated Church and was active in his community serving as a constable, deputy sheriff, and cemetery commissioner. He was also a member of the Essex Masonic Temple. He and Ruth retired to Florida in January 1972, where Ruth predeceased him in 1975. He married Ruby Pottinger on Jan. 6, 1978, she predeceased him on April 23, 2009. To be closer to his children, he moved back to Vermont in March 2011, making his home with his son, John, of Monkton. He is survived by three children, John Gaudette (Thea) of Monkton, Barbara Murray (Michael) of Grand Isle, Vt., and Ned Gaudette (Vickie) of Pittsboro, N.C.; granddaughters, Laura, Katherine, Peggy, and Chelsea; grandson, John Jr.; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ernie is also survived by two sisters, Jean Brown of Windsor, Vt., and Marian Knowles of Malletts Bay, Vt. He was predeceased by his brothers, Clifford, Arthur, and Francis; and sisters, Mabelle, Florence, Vivian, and Lillian. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m., with a service at 11 a.m., at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction, Vt., with burial to follow at East End Cemetery in Williston.
