Doris Sessions Armstrong Saratoga Springs - Doris Sessions Armstrong of Federal Street left us on December 21, 2011. Born on April 30, 1922 in Grand Rapids MI, she was the daughter of Donald W. and Leola L. Sessions. She was a graduate of Hirsch High School and Moser Business School, Chicago, IL. She also attended Skidmore College. During World War II she worked for The Manhattan Project in Chicago and New York, where she met and married Hudson E. Armstrong on April 15, 1944. They moved to this area in 1947, first settling in South Glens Falls. In 1952, they moved to Wilton. Doris and Hudson organized a 4-H group known as "The Wildcats." Doris was also a founding member and first president of The Wilton Heritage Society. During this time, Doris worked at the Wilton State School, on Mt. McGregor. After moving to Saratoga Springs in 1968, she worked for the next forty years at Tom Thum Bookshop, The American Red Cross, Skidmore College (where she held the post of Assistant to the Director of Financial Aid), Hammond House, Living Resources, Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, Saratoga Springs Urban Cultural Park, and Saratoga Springs History Museum. For many years she was a member of Bethesda Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday School. She also ran the Church gift shop and served as music secretary. More recently she was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, where she volunteered with Stephen Ministry. She was a graduate of the EFM Bible Study Programs, and a member of the Senior Bible Study Group. She enthusiastically attended the monthly senor lunches, and was a very active participant in the church prayer chain. Doris served on the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee, and could always be found at her local polling place. A tireless volunteer, Doris also found time to support The Saratoga Room at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, The Saratoga Chamber Singers, The Historical Society of Saratoga Springs, and Brookside Museum amongst others. Doris' passion for local history was well known, and she spent considerable time collecting local history and organizing it into two vast collections, which now reside in The Historical Society of Saratoga Springs' archives, and the collection of the Saratoga County Historian's Office. Doris was predeceased by her husband Hudson E. Armstrong, who died September 5, 1965. She is survived by her sons: J. Hudson S. of Saratoga Springs; Donald W.S. and wife Victoria of Tucson, AZ; And Stuart W.S. of Saratoga Springs; her grandson Joaquin S. of Boulder, CO; her granddaughter Celeste E. of Park City, UT; her sister Nancy Sessions Clymer of Nashville, TN and her niece Pamela Clymer Huey of Smyrna, TN. Doris chose to make a gift to The Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College. Her family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to her extended family at St. George's (particularly Fr. John Henry, Phyllis and Sam Aldrich, and Kate Ferris), for their devotion, care, and love. A memorial service will be held in the Spring. Contributions in her memory may be sent to St. George's School, 912 Route 146, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
