Clinton Z. McDonald 86, known as Zeph, departed this life on Aug. 24, 2013. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the First Tabernacle, 343 Meeker Ave., Newark, NJ. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of services. Arrangements are in the loving care of the Nesbitt Funeral Home, 165 Madison Ave., Elizabeth, N.J. Born in Bellville, Va., Mr. McDonald lived throughout the United States before moving to Roselle and Newark, N.J. He received an honorable discharged from the United States Army and had served in Korea. Zeph worked for the Wakefern Food Corporation for a number of years and then went to work for the Newark Housing Authority, where he retired in 1991. Zeph was very influential in the organization of the Homo Sapiens Quartet, a well-known group managed by Joseph C. Person that performed throughout the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. Zeph was instrumental in engaging the group to sing on the radio station WBLI. Additionally, Zeph co-directed the Newark A Cappella Chorus and the New England A Cappella Choir. Zeph continued throughout his life to remain dedicated and committed to the church and choir. He was extremely devoted to his church and loyal to his family and friends. Zeph was predeceased by his parents, Elder James B. McDonald and St. Elwena McDonald; wife, Dorothy; son, Jaime, and sister-in-law, Deloris Curly. He leaves to mourn his memory, his children, Clinton Z. Jr. (Sharon), Karen (fiance, Benyamis Ismael) and Lynn; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Levi and Lloyd Person; two sisters, Phoebe Kemp and Anna Thomas, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
