CHARLES SAMUEL WILLIAMS SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Charles Samuel Williams, 84, a longtime resident of Scottsdale, AZ, and formerly of Ithaca, NY and Croton-on-Hudson, NY, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2008. Charlie was born in New York City, June 29, 1923, the son of George and Addie Williams Greenberg, and went on to graduate from Croton-Harmon High School. After graduation, he attended Cornell University, Class of '44, before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps. He was a B-25 pilot, flying 54 missions in the Pacific Theater with the 38th Bomb Group—the "Sunsetters", 71st Bomb Squadron, 5th Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain, and earning the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, among several medals. While in the Air Corps, he married Barbara Putnam of Jamestown, New York, with whom he recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. He was active in alumni affairs and the Class of '44 at Cornell, and jumped at the chance to leave the hustle and bustle of Wall Street behind and become the Managing Editor of the Cornell Alumni News in Ithaca, NY. He served in this position from 1963 until his retirement in 1987. He also served as President of the Class of '44 and had remained active in class affairs. Charlie is survived by his wife, Barbara of Scottsdale; two daughters, Marcia of Thornton, CO, and Tracey, also of Scottsdale; a brother, L. Pearce Williams and sister-in-law, Sylvia of Ithaca, NY; and sister-in-law, Sue Putnam Magnuson of Jamestown, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cards may be sent to 7717 E. Medlock Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85250. Charlie's love of the aircraft he flew, a B-25, has prompted the family to request that, in lieu of flowers, a tax deductible donation be made in his name to the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, 2017 North Greenfield Road, Mesa, AZ 85215. This museum is currently restoring a B-25, and we all agree, he would have loved that. Charlie chose to be cremated and his ashes will be interred in the National Cemetery of Arizona at Cave Creek, with full Military Honors, at the convenience of the family.
