Charles J. O'Neill, 80, of Budd Lake, N.J., died on July 14, 2011. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 17, 2011, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Rd. (corner of 206), Chester, N.J. (908) 879-3090. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jude's Church in Mount Olive, N.J. Charles was born in New York City and lived in Brooklyn until 1960. He graduated from high school from St. Francis Prep, earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University and a master's degree from Seton Hall University. Later in life, he took graduate courses each summer at the University of Notre Dame. Charles' teaching career spanned 58 years. It began at Saint Anthony's School in Brooklyn and continued at St. Francis Prep. Moving to New Jersey, he taught at Morristown Beard School for 10 years. Having served one year as headmaster of St. Brigid Academy in Peapack, he moved on to Boonton High School, where he taught Latin and English for 37 years. He retired in 2010. In addition to teaching, Mr. O'Neill coached football, baseball and announced football games for many years. He also served as summer school director, adult education supervisor, teacher mentor and president of the teachers' union. He was also a lector at St. Jude Parish in Budd Lake, N.J. He is survived by his loving wife, Gail; his daughter, Colleen O'Neill Groves; his sons, Timothy K. O'Neill and wife, Gina, and Sean O'Neill; he was Pop-Pop to Maggie, Molly and Laura Groves, and Erin, Timmy and Brian O'Neill; loving stepfather to Jacqueline Mazzucco and her husband, Mark, Carolyn Sawaya and husband, Joseph and Pop-Pop to Michael, Lindsay Mazzucco and Alexis Sawaya. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send a memorial gift to Market Street Mission in Morristown, N.J.
