Chuck Neill, 93, a longtime resident of Shalimar, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011.He was born on June 11, 1917, in Clifton, N.J. Chuck was a veteran pilot of World War II, amassing over 830 combat hours. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as numerous ribbons, medals and commendations. He attended Auburn University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He retired with 20 years of active duty service in 1968 with over 6,000 total flying hours. Chuck then worked at Eglin Air Force Base as a civil service engineer for over 22 years and retired in 1990 at the age of 73.Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Betty, after almost 15 years of marriage; three sons, Charles (Peggy) Neill Jr. of Aiken, S.C., John (Kim) Neill of Montgomery, Ala., and William (Brenda) Neill of Fairhope, Ala.; and Betty's daughter, Marilou (Larry) Wilder of Suffolk, Va.; eight grandchildren, Charles III (Jennifer) Neill, Shanna (Bryan) Vasser, Nicole Neill, Ashley (Justin) Thomas, Hunter Neill, Parker Neill, Kristen (Christopher) Dorgan and Kirby (Daniel) Lessard; and Betty's grandson, Brandon Wilder; and three great-granddaughters, Mary Ella and Audrey Dorgan and Reagan Lessard. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dickey, after almost 47 years of marriage; and by a ninth grandchild, Lindsay Neill.Chuck was a Mason and a Shriner, as well as a member of the ECCA, QBs, Daedalians, MOAA, Fort Walton Yacht Club and Shalimar United Methodist Church. Services will be held in the Shalimar United Methodist Church Sanctuary at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, with Larry Bryars officiating, followed by a reception at the church. Chuck will be interred at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla., after a short graveside service at 2 p.m.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Shalimar United Methodist Church, 1 Old Ferry Road, Shalimar, FL 32579.Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted online at www.mclaughlinmortuary.com
