ARMSTRONG, CARL WYMAN, 81, of Mt. Washington, passed away at his home on January 26, 2012 surrounded by his loving family and friends. Carl was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Carl was a farmer, land developer and business man. He was a proud tobacco and livestock farmer throughout his life until his health challenges began in 1999. Carl was a Marathon Oil Co. distributor for over 30 years, owning petroleum businesses in Mt. Washington and Taylorsville. He also owned Armstrong's Sporting Goods store in Mt. Washington in the late 70's and developed real estate property around Mt. Washington. Carl was an avid sports enthusiast and played basketball in high school. He was a great softball player, and later coached/managed softball teams for many years. His softball teams, known as Carl's Boys and Armstrong Oil Co., won state championships in both ASA and USSA Softball in the late 70's. He also had a lifelong love for the University of Kentucky Basketball/Football and Boston Red Sox baseball. Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel O. Armstrong Sr. and Emma (Ridgeway) Armstrong; one son, Frank W. Armstrong; and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, who took incredible care of him throughout his illness, Emma Mae (Troutman) Armstrong; three children, Gary L. Armstrong (Beverley), Carla Ann Armstrong Rucker (Earl), and Patrick L. Armstrong (Renee); his grandchildren, great grandchildren, one brother, and three sisters. The Armstrong family is forever grateful for the support from our family and friends throughout Carl's long illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Washington Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 - 8 p.m. Saturday and after 11 a.m. Sunday. Memorial gifts may be made to Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation or donor's favorite charity.
