CHAPMAN, BETTY CARPENTER, Funeral Services for Mrs. Betty Carpenter Chapman, age 58, of Apopka, will be held Friday July 26, 2002 at 11AM at the Journey Christian Church, Apopka with Pastor Tom Hensley, Pastor Dan Donaldson, Pastor Don Yates officiating. Visitation for friends will be held Thursday from 6-9PM at the Apopka Chapel of the Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Homes. Interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Mrs. Carpenter Chapman was a former Principal of Magnolia and Clay Springs Schools. She died at 2AM on Tuesday July 23, 2002. Betty loved children and they loved her. She was Principal of Magnolia School for 161/2 years. Magnolia was known throughout Florida and the nation for its innovative curriculum for severely disabled students. Many parents moved to Orange County so their child could attend Magnolia. The school hosted many visitors from throughout the United States and Canada. She also served as Principal of Clay Springs Elementary, before cancer forced her to retire. She was proud of the A rating earned by Clay Springs during her tenure as principal. Born in Haysi, Virginia the youngest child of the late Birk and Bonnie Ratliff. She taught in the Department of Defense Schools in the Philippines and in Germany, was a speech therapist in North Carolina, taught disabled students and was a staffing specialist in Orange County. In 1981 she became an Orange County Principal. Several Orange County Principal's began their careers as her assistant. She received many honors and awards and served on numerous committees and boards of directors. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Florida Christian College in Kissimmee and was a Past President of the Special School Principals Association of Florida. Betty boldly proclaimed her faith in Jesus Christ to others through her generous giving of her time, money and effort. She prayed with fellow cancer victims at the MD Anderson Center in the lobby and the chemo lab. She taught Sunday school classes, did workshops at national Bible conferences and held Bible study classes in her home. Betty was first and foremost a Christian. She had strong ties to the Christian Church as a member of Southeast Christian Church and Lakeview (Journey) Christian Church. At her death she was a member of the Northside Baptist Church in Apopka. She also attended the St. Patrick Episcopal Church in Ocala. Betty is survived by her husband, Richard; two sons, Harvey Carpenter of Apopka and Jeff Carpenter of Maitland; two step-children, Angela Buchanan of Winter Springs and Michael Chapman of Detroit, MI; eight grandchildren Lillian, Nicholas, Kayla and Kyle Carpenter, and James, Brenna, Joshua and Michaela Chapman; sister, Jackie Rasnick of Wise, VA; brother, B.L. Ratliff of Clintwood, VA, brother, Donald Ratliff of Clinchco, VA; and several nieces and nephews living in Central Florida and Virginia.
