Annie Mae Witt Owens(Mrs. ClintonRichard Owens)Town CreekAnnie Mae Witt Owens was born in Mount Hope on May 4, 1926, and died on October 5, 2013, in Town Creek following an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Clinton Richard Owens of Town Creek; her parents, Claude Witt and Annie Belle Harris Witt of Mount Hope; a stepmother, Ella Sockwell Witt of Tuscumbia; two brothers, Claude Witt Jr. of Mount Hope and Walter Witt of Courtland; two sisters, Mary Lee Witt of Mount Hope and Juanita Jeffreys of Hatton; and a great-nephew, Jeff Witt of Mount Hope. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Claudia Ann Owens Walker of Town Creek; granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Anderson of Town Creek; grandson, Clint Owen Anderson of Town Creek; one niece, Darlo Witt Wimberly of Mount Hope; two nephews, Max Witt of Mount Hope and Dan Jeffreys of Huntsville. She also has two great-nieces.She was a graduate of Hatton High School. Following high school, she attended Florence State Teachers College (UNA), receiving a degree in Elementary Education (BSEd). Her first jobs were at C.C. Smith and Mount Hope Schools in Lawrence County. While working in Falkville, she attended Peabody College at Vanderbilt in Nashville where she received her Master's Degree in Elementary Education (MSEd). Mrs. Owens taught numerous years in Huntsville. While teaching there, she was president of the "Classroom Teacher's Organization" and represented Huntsville Public Schools at the National Education Association's annual meeting. Later, Owens moved to Tuscaloosa where she received her Education Specialists Degree (EdS) in Special Education from the Univeristy of Alabama. She retired from teaching after 40 years of service from the Montgomery Public School System.She was active in numerous organizations throughtout her life, including a Silver Sister of Alpha Delta Kappa, Kappa Kappa Iota, Women's Studies Club, Women's Literary Society, Women's Association of Colleges and Universities, Radiance Garden Club (Courtland), Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Alabama Society Daughters of the American Colonists, and Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. She was also a member of many philanthropic organizations, readily donating time and money. She helped to raise monies for the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the National Diabetes Foundation. In addition, Mrs. Owens taught Sunday school and Bible school at numerous churches where she has lived. She served as superintendent of Sunday school at First Baptist Church in Huntsville. She was currently a member of Okolona Baptist Church in Town Creek.Visitation for Mrs. Owens will be held Wednesday, October 9th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home in Moulton, with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. The service will be officiated by Chaplain James Tambordo. Father Roy Runkle of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Florence will assist with the visitation.Pallbearers are Billy Joe Wimberly, Max Witt, Jerone Witt, Donald Berryman, Burlis Mears and Neil Mulcher. Honorary pallbearers are Clint Owen Anderson, Duston Horton and Travis Wray.Appreciation goes to the employees of Amedisys Hospice in Florence. Special thanks go to Dorothy Phillips, Sharon McGee, Josh Tambordo, Ashley Hopson of Amedisys, and Barbara Upton of Hatton.Burial services will be at the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Town Creek following the service.
