Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Crestwood Chapel for William Vincent "Vince" Norton, 96, Glencoe, who died Monday, May 24, 2010. The Rev. Raymond Pearson and the Rev. John Cohorn will officiate. Burial will be in Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct. Vince, a millwright at Republic Steel Corporation, retired in 1969. He went on to be a school bus driver for Glencoe High, Middle and Elementary schools as he continued a logging business he and his brother operated for many years.Vince was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Kelly Norton; son-in-law, Jack Lamar Hall; as well as his parents; six brothers; and a sister.He is survived by his children, William Norman Norton (Lynette), Gadsden, G.R. Norton, Glencoe, Wanda N. Hyde (David), Cumming, Ga., Judy N. Colvard (Craig), Glencoe, and Rita N. Hall, Pelham; eight grandchildren, Allan. N. Norton (Christi), Traci Klepsig (John), Zachary B. Norton (Carrie), Amanda C. Barton (Ernie), Joshua C. Colvard, J. Matthew Hall, Meghan H. Garner and Robyn H. Michalove (Roddy); and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma N. Edgar, Glencoe; brother-in-law, Frank Campbell, Gallant; sister-in-law, Winifred Stedham, Glencoe; and sister-in-law, Virginia Elliott (Buddy), Lake Alfred, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews; as well as his special friend, Elizabeth Billingsly.Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Vince was an active member and deacon emeritus at Oak Grove Baptist Church and an integral part of the rebuilding of the sanctuary and educational buildings in the late 1960s. He was actively involved in the Senior Citizens Center of Glencoe, where he enjoyed playing pool in previous years, and did his walks every weekday morning until about six weeks ago. He will be sorely missed by his family. He was Daddy, Pap and Pawpaw to us, and nothing pleased him more than to be with his family. The family would like to thank Dr. H.B. Thompson and his nurse, Tracy, for taking care of him for so many years. You both are much appreciated. They would also like to thank Alacare Hospice service, Jeanie and Jessica, in particular. You were heaven-sent in his last days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church's cemetery fund through the Baptist Foundation, Trust No. 1255, P.O. Box 4773, Montgomery, AL 36103, or the Glencoe Senior Outreach Program, 407 Hollingsworth Park Lane, Glencoe, AL 35905.The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service.
