Obituary of Queen-Esther Jackson


TRENTON - Queen Esther Jackson, age 80, of Trenton, departed this life on June 5, 2013, at home. Queenie was born on April 20, 1933, to the late Joseph Jones and Irene Gaines. She attended the public school system in King and Queen County, Va., and was a graduate of National School of Nursing in Philadelphia, class of 1954. Queenie moved to Trenton in 1959. As a long standing and active member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Trenton, Queenie served diligently with the Women's Ministry, the Ladies Guild, the Hospitality Ministry, and the Thursday Noon Bible Study. She was a Shiloh Legend. After 33 years of dedicated service Queenie retired from the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital in 1991 where she was a member of the AFSCME Council serving on the retirement committee and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. She was a past member of the National Congress of Black Women, the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women, Inc., where she served on the Hospitality Committee, the Community Cultural Club and the Trenton Community Choir. She also served as a volunteer for the Trenton/Ewing Meals on Wheels, the Mercer County Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Mercer County Board of Elections. She received certificates from the National and Community Service Corps and the Union Leader Academy sponsored by the Rutgers University Trenton Center. Queenie was predeceased by her father, Joseph Jones, late husband Joseph L. Jackson, and two sisters, Julia Pearl Booker and Elizabeth Levi, three brothers, Urie and Edward and Thomas Brooks. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Vernice Paige of Morrisville, Pa.; three brothers, Joseph (Estelle), Robert (Helen), David (Elsie) Jones; one sister, Mildred (George) Mikell all of Richmond, Va.; three nephews, Richard Booker of Petersburg, Va., Robert Booker of Atlanta, Ga., Ronald Jones Jr. "Ron Ron" of Richmond, Va., and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at the Shiloh Baptist Church 340 Rev. S. Howard Woodson Way, Trenton. Calling hours will be 8 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment Ewing Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home.
