Obituary of Mervin-Harold Sims


SIMS, Mervin Harold September 21, 1920 - December 8, 2007 Mervin Harold Sims, beloved husband of Winifred (Freda) of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the age of 87 years. Mervin was born on September 21, 1920 in Chilliwack, BC. He was educated in Vancouver which included two years at UBC studying Chemical Engineering from 1940 to 1941. Mervin enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was posted overseas to the 418 Squadron as a fighter pilot flying the Mosquito Night Fighter. After completing a successful tour Mervin was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944 and was honourably discharged in 1946. Mervin then enrolled in the Royal Air Force in 1946 and he flew numerous types of aircrafts. In 1950 he met and married his beloved Freda Donnelly of Dundee, Scotland in Hamburg, Germany. In 1951, after completing his tour of duty with the RAF, Flight Lieutenant Mervin Sims was once again honourably discharged. Mervin and Freda then moved to Veteran, AB where they began farming and raising their family. In 1957 he moved his family to Calgary while continuing to farm in Veteran until his retirement in 1983. Mervin spent his retirement years in Calgary and continued to follow his passion of hiking and cross country skiing in the mountains with various outdoor clubs. Mervin is survived by his beloved wife Freda and by his devoted daughter Lesley; sons and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Patti, Clifford and Derek.
