SKOWHEGAN -- Margaret M. James, 91, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at Inland Hospital, Waterville. She was born in East Madison on Feb. 19, 1914, the daughter of Arthur and Margaret (O'Melia) McManus. She was a graduate of Skowhegan High School, class of 1932. She married Carl James in 1932; he died June 17, 1970.As a young lady, Margaret worked for the woolen mills in Winslow, then as a waitress in Skowhegan and Fairfield restaurants and then she worked at White's Poultry Farm. She was an avid outdoorswoman, enjoying hunting and fishing, being the first woman to qualify for the Maine "Big Buck" Club. She loved raising animals and tending her gardens. She played the piano beautifully and enjoyed being with family.Survivors include a sister, Anne Campbell of Skowhegan; five grandchildren, Denis Lawrence and wife Lucie of Solon, Dianna Rollins and husband, Blin Jr., of Solon, Daniel Lawrence of Skowhegan, Donna DesRoberts and companion, Roland, of Palmyra and Darrell Lawrence and wife, Cindy, of Solon; eight great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a special niece, Pat Irwin, of Skowhegan.She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years; a daughter, Mary Ellen James Lawrence; a son-in-law, Floyd Lawrence; four brothers, Hamilton, Arthur, William and John McManus.Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery, Skowhegan.
