OTIS - Margaret Elizabeth (Smith) Salsbury Kane, 70, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 11, 2009, surrounded by her family. She was born Nov. 16, 1938, the only child of June (Foss) and Henry W. Smith. Peggy grew up in Ellsworth attending the local schools. She was a member of the Class of 1956, graduating with salutatorian honors and participating in band and several clubs. She graduated from Husson College in 1957. When she married, she moved to Otis, where she spent the last 50 years. Peggy was active in the Otis community. She was a member of Otis Baptist Church and What's for Suppah Food Pantry; a 50-year member of Mariaville Grange No. 127; a founding member of Tri Town Garden Club, Otis-Mariaville Women's Extension and Graham Lake Trail Riders; and prior member of Ellsworth Kiwanis. In the 1960s, Peggy and Errold were very active with the Ellsworth square dancing club. For many years, Peggy served as the tax collector, treasurer, town clerk and school board member for the town of Otis. She vacated these positions when she and her husband bought the original Otis General Store and rebuilt it in its current location. After selling the store, she worked for City of Ellsworth assessor's office. She left the assessor's office to work at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home until her retirement in 2005. Peggy loved to spend time with her friends. She also spent many enjoyable days camping and snowmobiling. One of her favorite activities was playing cards with her grandchildren, and she didn't like to lose. She is survived by her beloved husband, Phillip Kane of Otis; son, Blaine Salsbury and wife, Sandy; daughter, Sheila McManus and husband, Bill, all of Otis; grandchildren, Amanda Salsbury of Bar Harbor, Jason Salsbury and wife, April, of Waltham, Megan Morse of Otis, and Robert Morse of Mount Desert; great-granddaughter, Leah Salsbury; many cousins who were like the brothers and sisters she never had, and many close friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Errold Salsbury. Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, with Pastor Cliff Cain officiating. Interment will be immediately after at Evergreen Cemetery, Otis. Contributions in Peggy's memory may be made to Otis Baptist Church, 9 Church St., Otis, ME 04605.
