Maggie Elizabeth Hodges Barnes - Savannah - Maggie Elizabeth Hodges Barnes, 98, of Savannah, died Saturday, March 18, 2006 at home, under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc., surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Candler County, Ga., but resided in Savannah most of her life. She was the owner of Hodges Cafe on Liberty Street in the early fifties where she shared her passion for cooking with her customers. She had also worked as a welder at the Southeastern Shipyard, during WW II, and also the E & W Laundry on Anderson St. She was a Charter Member of Grace Primitive Baptist Church and a member of the Louise Black Circle and she also taught Sunday School in earlier years. She was preceded in death by husbands, Julian F. Hodges and Robert L. Barnes, daughter Edwina Thomas and a step daughter Faye Hearon. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Yvonne) Hodges of Savannah; a step-son, Robert L. Barnes Jr., of Midway; daughter and son-in-law, Rose (Arthur) Wilson of Eden; grand-daughter, Dianne (Lewis) Akins of Savannah; three step-daughters, Corine Jaudon, Lavine Cobia and Martheda (Doug) Humphries, all of Savannah, Ga; and 10 other grandchildren, 24 great -grandchildren; 12 great-great -grandchildren, and many other step-grandchildren, and step great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder J. Roland Waters, officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park. Mrs. Barnes will be taken to the church to lie in state at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
