Obituary of Lena Jacobs

JACOBS Lena (nee: Band) February 9, 1910 - February 23, 2008 98 years old, Squamish Nation Elder and Matriarch It is with deep sadness that the family announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, auntie and cousin who left to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Lena was born on the Mission Reserve IR No. 1 in North Vancouver, BC on February 9, 1910. She was a daughter of the late George Joseph Band & Marie-Anne "Molly" Baker. Lena proudly shared 50+ years with her late husband Alfred Isaac Jacob. She is survived by children: Russell Alfred Isaac Jacobs Sr.; George Peter Jacobs Sr. (Christine); Sharon Olive Mary Schorneck (Hart Sr.); Chief Gilbert "Gibby" Joseph Jacob (Vivian). Son-In-Law: Don Willie. 29 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Many loving relatives and dear friends. Early in her life, Lena worked at the Great Northern Cannery in West Vancouver and Canadian Fisheries on the Foot of Gore Street in Vancouver. Lena was one of the few fluent speakers of the Squamish Nation language. Her legacy will continue through her teachings and values of the culture and language of her people; she has instilled this practice upon her children and grandchildren to carry on for generations. Lena will be remembered for her active role with the Squamish Nation's Wa Chexw Nexwni?wn t a a I?mats / Your Grandchildren's Upbringing Elder Language Authority. She was a devout Christian, full of grace and elegance, possessed a strong constitution and a warm demeanour which embraced and greeted all. A celebration of life will be held in her honour at the St. Paul's Indian Catholic Church, 424 West Esplanade, North Vancouver, on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will also be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 10:30 am.
