Obituary of John-Peter Olson

-><!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Olson, John PeterRochester: Passed away peacefully on November 27th at the age of 84. He was born and raised in Greenwood WI, a small town in central Wisconsin where his father was a family doctor. During his youth he spent many hours trapping, fishing and hunting and enjoyed playing school sports.He was a graduate of Carleton College in Minnesota and University of Rochester Medical School and served in the Public Health Service in Galveston, Texas. He practiced medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and from the mid 70s until his retirement in 1996 at Rochester General Hospital where he became Medical Director of the Hematology Unit and the Mary M Gooley Hemophilia Center. He was a loyal supporter of both Strong Memorial Hospital and Rochester General Hospital throughout his career and retirement.During retirement he developed his interests in gardening, forestry and birdwatching, in the Rochester area and in the Adirondacks. He became a Master Gardener and a Master Urban forester through the Monroe County Cooperative Extension programs. He co-founded a volunteer stewardship group that meets weekly year 'round for over 12 years, focused on improving the Durand Eastman Park Arboretum. He loved reading, especially English Literature, history and natural history, and also enjoyed canoeing, hiking, and winter travels to Florida.John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Suzanne Arnold Olson, their four children Eric, Elizabeth, Christopher, and Claire; seven grandchildren and his sister Janet VanGorden and her family of Neillsville, WI. He and Suzanne were members of First Unitarian Church for many years, and a memorial service will be held there, at 220 Winton Road, on 14 December at 2:30PM.The needs of people and the environment both locally and around the world were important to John.
