John Louis Oakes, 77, of St. Augustine, formerly of Centralia, Chicago and Springfield, Ill., died on July 19, 2010, in his home.He was born in Sandoval, Ill., on Aug. 25, 1932, to Carroll and Flora (Schotter) Gorman. He lived in Centralia, Ill., and attended St. Mary"s Grade School, Centralia High School, Centralia Junior College and Southeast Missouri State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked nearly 40 years in the insurance industry, more than 35 of them being with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, from which he retired as vice president of underwriting (in Chicago) and head of the Health Improvement Association (in Springfield).He is a member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church and Marsh Creek Country Club, and he volunteered at Flagler Hospital. He loved golf, swimming, reading, and spending time with his family and two dogs.He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Kathleen; his devoted son, David John, and his wife, Hannah (Kim) Oakes; grandsons, Alexander and Oliver Oakes; his brother, Thomas Michael Oakes; his sister, Ann (Oakes) Dunn and brother-in-law Carl Dunn; mother-in-law, Jean Kibler; in-laws, William and Jackie (Fuchs) Kibler and Linda (Kibler) and Joseph Hayes; and many loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, friends and golf buddies. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Robert Hanlon at St. Anastasia Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, preceded by visitation from 8 to 9 a.m. Those wishing to make a contribution in John"s memory may have a Mass said at St. Anastasia Catholic Church.Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
