Obituary of James-MC Carthy

February 3, 2008 Dr. James Mc Carthy "Dr. Jim," 79, passed away in Sarasota, FL, on February 3, 2008, from stomach cancer. His body was donated to the University of Florida School of Medicine. Memorial services were held in Sarasota, Florida, and in San Diego, California. Dr. Jim was born November 8, 1928, in Syracuse to the late William and Amelia (Straub) Mc Carthy, who lived on Schuyler Street. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School, Class of 1946. He then entered a seminary in Alabama, becoming a missionary servant of the Most Holy Trinity. After studies in theology and philosophy, he served for 15 years in five southern states. Following his retirement from active ministry in 1971, he obtained a B.A. in fine arts from Immaculate Heart College, Hollywood, CA. In 1972 he married a teacher, Lorraine Goudreau, from ME. Dr. Jim received an M.A. in sociology from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. degree in humanistic psychology from Saybrook Institute, San Francisco; he taught psychology, African art, marriage and family relations, and human sexual behavior as an SDCC instructor. In past years he was a registered art therapist (ATR); a CA licensed marriage, family and child counselor (MFCC); a member of several professional organizations: the American Psychological Assoc. (APA) and the African Art committee of the San Diego Art Museum. He was an usher for the San Diego Symphony and accredited hospital visitor for San Diego Mended Hearts, plus co-editor of the MH newsletter. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Lorraine Mc Carthy of San Diego; two sisters, Betty Hyman of Palmyra, NY, and Rita Martin (Jack) of Cicero, NY, who were fortunate to visit with him the week before he died; three brothers, Richard, William (Eileen) and Michael (Ann Marie) of Syracuse; his aunt, Agnes Ewald of Zephyrhills, FL, and Syracuse; 17 nieces and nephews. A noon Mass will be celebrated on May 2 at St. Patrick's Church by Msgr. James Kennedy, Dr. Jim's boyhood friend and classmate. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Dr. James W.
