Obituary of Evelyn-M. Haines


TEWKSBURY -- Evelyn M. (McKenna) Haines, 82, a retired telephone company worker who had been active in community organizations, died yesterday, March 15, at home in Tewksbury. Her daughter, Miriam, and son-in-law, William, were with Mrs. Haines at the time of her death.She was born Feb. 22, 1924, in East Boston, the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Curran) McKenna. After graduating from Fitton Central High School in East Boston, she entered the Maryknoll Convent.Evelyn was known as Sister Cora Lee Marie. Having suffered a major illness in 1945, she received an indult of secularization from the pope, going on to work for the New England Telephone Co. in Watertown.She was an avid reader, a Girl Scout leader, and had joined morning bowling leagues from the 1960s to 2002.She was also a former member of the Tewksbury Senior Center and the Golden Age Club. She also enjoyed traveling, luncheons out, swimming, dancing and watching classic movies. Proud of her Irish heritage, she loved to sing Irish songs.As a parishioner of St. William's Church in Tewksbury, she attended Mass faithfully, often making first Fridays until her second major illness took over her life.She is the ex-wife of Richard E. Haines of Springfield, Ohio.She has two daughters, Miriam I. Kelleher and her husband, William P., of Tewksbury, and Carolyn M. Shine and her husband, J. Michael, of Wilmington; a brother, (the late) Henry McKenna and his wife, Rose, of Tewksbury; a sister, Ethel Salvo and her late husband, Dominic, of Derry, N.H.She was also the ex-sister-in-law of Elinor T. Haines and her late husband, Robert A., of Tewksbury, the late Fredrick E. Haines of Tewksbury, the late Donald F. Haines and his late wife, Charleen, of Boise, Idaho; Leonard C. Haines and his late wife, Alice A., of Billerica, Gerald A. Haines and his wife, Iryl F. of Springfield, Ohio; Dorothy B. Connolly and her husband, James W. of Tewksbury, Evelyn M. Haines and her late husband, William Peter, of Billerica, Margaret R. Haines and her late husband, Ralph T., of Weiser, Idaho; Joanne Haines of Nashua; Judith Madonna (Sarafina) Haines, Brenda A. Bizeur and her husband, Stanley, of New Hampshire; Donna G. Haines of Tewksbury.Mrs. Haines also leaves five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and good friend, Jeanne Wicks of Tewksbury.
