Obituary of David Owen


OWEN, David Moore Born in Saco, Maine on September 2, 1924. Passed away at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital on April 11, 2006. Survived by his loving wife, Helen Owen, by his sisters-in-law, JoAnn Outerbridge of Brentwood Bay, B.C. and Margaret Owen of Washington, U.S.A., his nieces Catherine (Al) Major of Oregon, Constance Owen and Laurie Owen, both of Washington, U.S.A., their children and grandchildren. David was predeceased by his brother, Richard Owen. During WW2, David served aboard a warship as a radar operator. He then worked as an oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts until his retirement. During his career, he worked as a deep sea photographer and was the first person to take a picture of the ocean floor a mile deep showing a starfish, later published in Life Magazine. He was a good friend of Jacques Yves Cousteau and worked with him to introduce the Aqualung to the U.S.A. David was perhaps the only diver who ever had a heart attack while working 100 feet down in the ocean. He later wrote an article for Skindiver Magazine entitled "Heart Attack at 100 Feet! ". David also wrote a book entitled "A Manual for Free Divers Using Compressed Air ". A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 2:00PM at the Brentwood United Church in Brentwood Bay. Anyone wishing may make a donation to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital in memory of David. 232414
