Bernard Haley 1918-2013 ARLINGTON Bernard Haley passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23rd at the age of 95. Born in Port Arthur, Canada on June 3, 1918, he was a long-time resident of Arlington, Vermont. Bernie proudly embodied the American Dream. Raised in Flushing, NY, he came from humble beginnings, which only reinforced his drive for success. His father, a brick-layer, died when he was young, and because his mother worked as a nanny outside the home, Bernard selflessly assisted in raising his younger siblings. He believed in himself, fought passionately against mediocrity, and his creed was hard work. He joined Mobil oil in 1937 as a mail clerk and rose up the company ladder, going to night school at Pace University to learn accounting and make his vision a reality. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in the mid 1940?s and was a member of the administrative team for the Los Alamos project. He met his wife Kay in Alexandria, Egypt in 1947 and they were married in Boston in 1950. Their son was born in Beirut, and their daughter followed a few years later in Istanbul. Having fallen in love with Paris, Bernie took a position as the Financial Director of Mobil Oil France. Upon retiring in 1973, he and his wife took up permanent residence in Arlington, VT.Bernie was a humble and patient man who appreciated antiques and relished in the restoration of old clocks. He could often be found in his barn, working relentlessly until his work was fitting to his perfectionist eye. He took exceptional pride in maintaining his property, and was quite the connoisseur of fine foods and wines. He was a devoted husband and father, an extraordinary grandfather, a proud great-grandfather, and a true friend to many. Bernard is survived by his son Stephen G. Haley and his wife Carolyn of Dallas, TX, daughter-in-law Gisele Haley of France, Marcia Dubreuil of Arlington, VT, sister Barbara Knippenberg of Long Island, grandchildren Olivia Dubreuil, Sarah Krautkremer and husband Shawn, and Thomas Haley, and great grandchildren Paris and Levi Krautkremer. He was preceded in death by his wife Katty (Leahmann) Haley who died on February 23, 2000.FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for Bernard will be held on Thursday, June 27 at 1pm at Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, Rt. 7A in Arlington, VT.
