Obituary of Barbara Johnston

JOHNSTON, BARBARA - After valiantly facing cancer, Barbara went to spend eternity with her Lord and Saviour on July 23, 2006. Born on May 16th, 1930 in Cambridge, Mass to Fred and Dorothy (Millar) Johnston. Barbara and her family came from Oxford, Nova Scotia when she was six years old, to a farm of her Uncle Seldon Dixon. Often she related many happy memories of life growing up in Cumberland county where things were always, "right some good"! After completing her education, Barbara pursued her calling in Nursing as a graduate of Highland View Hospital in Amherst, N.S. as an RN in 1953. On September 4th, 1954, Barbara wed Ronald James Rockwell of Amherst, NS. Raising three daughters, Jo-Ann, Jillian and Megan created a momentary "pause" in her nursing career which she resumed as a geriatric nurse in Halifax at several local nursing homes. In 1980, Ron, Barb and Megan left Halifax for Kenosha, Wisconsin when a "Dream Job" presented itself for Ron in Barbershop music. In 1995, Barbara returned to Canada to "retire" in Perry Settlement, making a lovely home for herself and her "girls", next to her daughter Jill and her family. She ran a Cat House, the "girls" most recently entrusted to her care were her cats; Zoë, Chloe and Callie. Never one to turn her back on anyone in need, Barb often sought out opportunities to "rescue" a special feline and endow it with her unending love and devotion. Barbara continued to share her phenomenal talent for sewing under the label, "Me-Me's Daughter". Numerous creations left her sewing room to adorn children of all ages, especially her granddaughters, "adopted granddaughters", and the many, many children God has blessed to the family of Apohaqui Community Church. Celebrating in the joy and honour of knowing Barbara are; her sister Eleanor Kamyszeck of Winnipeg, Man., her daughters, Jo-Ann (Darryl) Clarke, Jillian and Rocky Perry and Megan and Allen Arsenault, along with grandchildren; John, Jebediah, Mikaela, Travis, Joey, Amanda and James. As well as numerous friends and relatives who have each touched her life in countless ways. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, husband Ronald, brothers-in-law, Helmut and Bus and infant grandson, Ian Kyle Lathrop. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, Sussex, N.B. with visitation on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Service of Celebration will be held at the Apohaqui Community Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Vincent and Pastor Gordon Dickinson officiating. There will be a time of fellowship with the family in the Church Family Centre. A private Committal Service will take place at the Queensville Cemetery, Perry Settlement. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Apohaqui Community Church Children's Centre, would be appreciated by the family. www.wallacefuneralhome.com [The Telegraph-Journal]
