JAMES, Alice LouAge 91, a lifelong resident of Summertown, TN. Funeral service will be held Monday, August 22nd at 10a.m. at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg, TN. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 5-8p.m. Alice Lou died August 19th at NHC Hillview Health Center in Columbia TN, after an extended illness. She received excellent care at the Hillview Health Center, and by the loving hands of the Hospice Compassus staff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer C. James, and son, Jerry Thomas James (Joan). She is survived by five children; sixteen grandchildren; seventeen great- grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends. Her surviving children include Chris James (Glenda) of Flatwoods, Sid James (Carol) of Lawrenceburg, Becky James of Arlington, Deena Trimble (Darrell) of Columbia, and Lytle A. James of White House. Alice Lou Emmons was born at the Shiloh National Military Park on January 13, 1920, where her father was serving as park superintendent. Elmer and Alice Lou were married in Colorado Springs, CO, on October 8th, 1943, while Elmer was stationed at Camp Carson, CO, and serving in the United States Army during WWII. They returned to live in Summertown in 1950 after Elmer completed his education at David Lipscomb College and George Peabody College on the GI Bill. Alice Lou was a committed house wife who dedicated her life to serving God and raising her children. Alice Lou, the ultimate optimist, chose to live on the sunny side of life mixing humor with her home spun philosophy and easy-going demeanor. She was a natural born tree hugger who never met a flower, bird or butterfly she did not like. She was a founding member of the Summertown Garden Club serving as president for several years. Her yard on Monument Road was a spectacular flower garden due to the slave labor provided by all the family. She was an excellent cook who offered her family sumptuous meals and delicious desserts. Most importantly, Alice Lou was a life-long member of the Summertown Church of Christ. She served as teacher of the Ladies' Bible Class and a member of the Ladies' Quilting Circle for many years. Alice Lou was full of years, dedicating her life to serving God and serving Christ through the church. She became Christ's hands, feet and voice in the Summertown community. As a result her life was rich in doing what was good, honorable, excellent, and noteworthy. Now Alice Lou has become a part of the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds those of us who are part of Christ's church. She serves as an example of faith to us through her service to her Lord and to others. (In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Summertown Cemetery Association and/or the Tennessee Children's Home.) www.nealfuneralhome.net.
