WELLER, Albert (Sam) December 12, 1924 May 24, 2010 It is with deep sadness that the Weller family and James Bay Athletic Association announce the passing of Sam Weller. He is survived by wife Trudy, sister Joan, son Gord and daughter-inlaw Kathy. He was predeceased by son Douglas (1982) and brother Peter (2008). Sam was one of those brave young men to whom all owe the lives we presently enjoy flying off carriers as a radio operator and rear gunner in Swordfish aircraft in the North Sea during World War II, to bomb the Nazi in Norwegian fiords, and protect convoys on Atlantic and Murmansk runs. Shot down in the Atlantic early in the war, he was fortunate to be picked up by a nearby Allied ship, and returned to his flight duties. Surviving the war, he immigrated to Canada. With new bride Trudy Sam settled in Ontario, where he pursued a successful career in the engineering field, and raised his family. Upon retirement, Sam and Trudy came to Victoria, where Sam began his decades-long service to rugby and to the James Bay club providing wise counsel first in line to help, when help was needed. Sam also served as friend and supporter of the Ebb Tide Rugby Club. Sam died still fully engaged still caring for beloved wife Trudy in their Victoria home still raising the flag at MacDonald Park each home Saturday still tending the score board he constructed still cheering His Team forward to season's end this May. Unwavering in personal conviction unfailingly cordial and polite in adversity Sam was representative of the very best that Britain has offered Canada over the years. It is not for us to understand the forces that bring men of such accomplishment and character to our life and to our game. We can only give thanks for Sam's time amongst us. Thank you Sam. Soldier Citizen of Canada Valued Friend. We will remember you on winter Thursdays after practice on Saturdays when we come to view our games and in spaces of reflection in between. Sam's life amongst us will be celebrated on Friday, June 11 at 6:00 PM, at the JBAA Clubhouse, 205 Simcoe St. in James Bay. 591954
