WHALEN, William P., 84, died May 4, 2005. He was a retired senior vice president of Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Inc. Born December 29, 1920, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he had been a Tampa resident and a member of Christ the King Catholic Church since 1965. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and was awarded the Bronze Star medal with the Combat V for valor. He retired as a commander. He was a graduate of Kent State University in Ohio in 1943, a member of Sigma Tau Gamma and Delta Tau Delta fraternities, and the Kent State President's Club and Dean's Counsel. He was past treasurer of the Navy League of Tampa, Knights of Columbus, B.P.O. Elks, Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club, Seagram American Legion Post, Irish Club of Tampa, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Reserve Officers Association of the U.S. Naval Reserve, and past president of Hillsborough County Chapter American Diabetes Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margaret; his si ster, Mary; and his brothers, Bernard and Thomas. His spirit continues to live through his brother, Frank Whalen of Cleveland; two sisters, Annabelle Whalen and Kathleen Whalen Andrews of Kansas City, Mo.; and many, many nieces and nephews. Bill and Margaret's family of nine loving children include three daughters and six sons and their spouses, 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Their daughters include Catherine Whalen of Atlanta, Ga.; Mary Whalen McMickle and J.T. McMickle, and their children, Robert, Michael and Maggie of Weston, Fla.; and Rosemary Whalen Jonson and Cmdr. Scott Jonson, U.S. Navy, and their daughter, Heidi of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and sons, Sean and Tom Whalen of Tampa; Mike Whalen and children, Bryan and Kathryn of New Orleans, La.; Patrick and Barbara Whalen and their children, Karen of Atlanta, Megan, Eimile, Mary Colleen, Sean, Brian, Casey, Molly and Brady of San Antonio, Fla.; Kevin and Suzanne Whalen and their children, Brendan and Emily of Longwood, Fla.; and William J. and Patti Whalen and their children, Mary, Kelley, Elizabeth, Erin, and Heidi Whalen Roth and husband Steven Roth, and their child, Carter of Tampa. The family will receive friends at a visitation and rosary service 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2005, at Marsicano Funeral Home, 4040 Henderson Blvd., Tampa. A celebration of life Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Desmond Daly officiating. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in William's name to the American Diabetes Association, 4902 Eisenhower Blvd., Suite 295, Tampa, FL 33634, or the William and Margaret Endowed Scholarship Fund for needy students at Jesuit High School, 4702 N.
