William Nolan Barnett DUNCAN-- William Nolan Barnett, 86, formerly of Duncan, died May 26, 2014. A native of Greenville County, son of the late William C. and Inez Lynn Barnett, a 1951 graduate of Clemson College, he received a Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina, founder and past president of Barnett Nurseries, Inc., a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a teacher at Lewisville High School from 1954-1956, and at James F. Byrnes High School from 1956-1970. He served as a former assistant to the superintendent of District Five Schools. Mr. Barnett served as president and member of the Board of Directors of S.C. Nurserymen Association and a member of the Board of Governors for American Association of Nurserymen for eight years. He was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Dept. of Horticulture Spartanburg Technical College; was President of the Duncan Ruritan Club; and served with the Future Farmers Association Chapter Advisor. He was a former member, Sunday School Teacher and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Duncan. He was a member of Landrum First Baptist Church. Mr. Barnett was a member of the Piedmont Woodcarvers Greenville, National Woodcarvers, Spartanburg County Retired Teachers Association and the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Advisory Committee. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Sloan Barnett of the home; a son, Nolan Keith Barnett and his wife, Gail of Duncan; a brother, Buddy N. Barnett of Taylors; two grandchildren, Austin Rex Barnett and his wife, Angela and Weston John Barnett and his wife, Amanda and four great-grandchildren, Ayden, Anders, Raegen and Dalen. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at The Wood Mortuary Chapel, conducted by Rev. Mark Bishop and Rev. Henry Stanford. Burial will follow in Wood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary. The family is at their respective homes. Online condolences may be made at www.thewoodmortuary.com.
