Retired Mechanical Engineer MARTINEZ, Ga. - Mr. William C. York, beloved husband of 63 years to Leona Shore York, entered into rest on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at University Hospital. Born in Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y., on November 5, 1917, Mr. York received a degree in mechanical engineering from Lafayette College in Hershey, Pa. After working as an engineer with such companies as General Electric, Grumman Aircraft and Ebasco Services, Mr. York retired as Chief of the Construction Division of the Panama Canal Zone. In his youth, Mr. York played semi-professional football and later coached various local baseball and football teams in the Hicksville area. He was an accomplished golfer and received numerous awards as a senior player. Besides being a member of the Elks Club, Mr. York was also a member of the Panama Canal Society. He served several terms as the president of the Aiken chapter. Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Norma York Holder of Martinez and Nancy York Coffey of Keystone Heights, Fla.; four grandchildren, Anne-Marie Holder Germany (and her husband, Joshua Germany) of Augusta, Jessica Elizabeth Holder of Brooklyn, N.Y., Christina Theresa Holder of Brooklyn and Christopher York Coffey of Keystone Heights, Fla.; and a great-granddaughter, Presley Holder of Brooklyn. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Platt's Funeral Home, 337 N. Belair Road, Evans, GA 30809, Evans, GA 30809, 860-6166 with Reverend Mark Taylor officiating.
